All Systems Red is the first novella in Martha Wells’s Murderbot Diaries, a science fiction series blending action, mystery, and sharp character-driven humor.

Setting and Premise

The story takes place in a future where planetary exploration and corporate expansion are routine. Teams surveying or studying alien worlds depend on security units — part machine, part cloned human tissue — supplied and programmed by powerful corporations. These units are designed to follow orders and protect clients from hazards ranging from wildlife to environmental dangers and potential sabotage.

One such unit is the protagonist, a security construct that secretly refers to itself as “Murderbot.” Although officially known only by its designation, Murderbot has hacked its governor module — the failsafe system that enforces complete obedience — and gained free will. Rather than using its independence for rebellion or violence, it mostly prefers to be left alone to watch soap operas and avoid social interaction.

Initial Mission

Murderbot is assigned to protect a small planetary survey team led by Dr. Mensah, a thoughtful and competent scientist. The group is on an undeveloped world to collect environmental data for future study or potential exploitation. Murderbot performs its duties with minimal engagement, trying not to reveal that it’s functioning outside corporate control.

The Threat Emerges

The quiet work is disrupted when parts of the team’s mission data go missing and equipment malfunctions occur. Neighboring survey groups stop communicating, which is unusual in such regulated operations. Soon, the team discovers that one of the other human groups has been attacked, and their camp destroyed. It becomes clear that someone has tampered with safety protocols, placing Mensah’s team in danger.

Murderbot, operating below the radar, begins investigating and protecting the humans while battling its own discomfort about being in the spotlight. It must reveal more competence — and more humanity — than it wants to, partly because the dangers are severe and partly because it has developed an attachment to these particular humans.

Confrontation and Revelation

The threats escalate into direct sabotage and an ambush. Murderbot acts decisively, protecting the team from attacks by rogue drones and human assailants. In the process, the humans learn that Murderbot has no functioning governor module, a fact that would normally make it suspect and dangerous in their eyes. Instead, Dr. Mensah and most of the team choose to trust it, seeing its actions as proof of loyalty rather than a threat.

The investigation uncovers the corporate negligence and possibly deliberate interference behind the attack, but the novella focuses less on fully resolving the corporate plot than on showing Murderbot’s growth in self-awareness and in its relationships with humans.

Ending and Themes

When rescue arrives, Mensah offers Murderbot freedom and a place among the team, signaling genuine acceptance. However, Murderbot decides to leave, not because it dislikes them, but because it fears that prolonged interaction will erode its autonomy and force it into uncomfortable emotional territory. It wants to understand itself better, away from corporate control and human expectations.

The novella explores themes of autonomy, trust, and identity — showing how even a being engineered for obedience and violence can choose its own path. Murderbot’s dry humor, social awkwardness, and surprising compassion make it relatable despite its mechanical nature.
